According to fiscal year 2020-21 reports Florida’s certified domestic violence centers provided more than 412,000 nights of emergency shelter to more than 10,000 survivors of domestic violence.
According to the World Population Review (2023), in the United States, about 10 million people are victims of domestic violence each year. In the year 2023, the state of Florida reported 37% violent acts against women (29.3% for men).
Recent fatal Domestic Violence cases in Central Florida include Shakeria Rucker (11/16 /2023Apopka) and Den'Jah Moore (11/22/2023 Daytona Beach).
HUD's Role: Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking have housing protections under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) as well as other federal laws, and under some state and local laws. These protections are critical because they help survivors access and maintain safe, stable housing.
Purpose: We are having this summit to educate Central Florida Community Svc Agencies, Caseworkers and Support Specialist on services available for surviving families and victims of violence (to include DV, Trafficking, Sexual Assault, and/or Stalking). Topics will address Justice, Safety, Healing and Resources
*Central Florida to include Orlando/Orange Co, Apopka/Seminole Co. , Osceola/Kissimmee, Groveland/Lake County and surrounding areas
Expected Outcome: Community svc agencies will gain knowledge and skills to enhance efforts to better support survivors.
Goal I is to 1) Breakdown barriers that hinder disclosure of DV (social, personal, shaming, reverse stigmas); 2) Empower survivors to rebuild their lives with dignity and strength and 3) Equip Service Providers and First Responders with resources for referrals and tracking incidents.
Goal II Use summit to connect Community Leaders and agencies for networking opportunities and referrals.
Goal III Continue efforts during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) Attorney General Moody Shares Resources for Victims Amid National Domestic Violence Awareness Month - YouTube
